Building a support system
Elliott D., Age 57
Living with psoriasis since 1978
Though Elliott says his pain level from psoriasis was severe at times, he considers the social stigma worse. “Society places such a great deal of importance on appearance. When you have a condition like psoriasis, you stand out,” Elliott explains. Even going out to get groceries or gas was uncomfortable for him. The psoriasis on his hands was especially embarrassing because he had trouble hiding it.
“There wasn't a day that passed that kids didn't ask about my condition. They would say, ‘Did you get burned?’” He tried to be relaxed when people were curious about his skin, but it would affect him emotionally. He has always been active in public speaking and leading seminars, but Elliott was concerned his audience was paying more attention to his psoriasis than the subject matter of his presentations.
Fortunately, Elliott has a great support system at home and with his doctor. “I am lucky to have such a supportive wife,” he says. “My son is also such a good kid. He understands psoriasis is a problem for me, and is very loving.” In 2005, Elliott and his dermatologist found a psoriasis treatment that helped his symptoms. “I can finally focus on my life and not my disease.” He feels much more comfortable in social situations; he even started taking a martial arts class, something he has wanted to try for years.
