Psoriasis and weight gain

Is there a link between psoriasis and weight gain?

Although no direct link between psoriasis and weight gain has been proven, it has been observed that people with psoriasis tend to be overweight. It's unclear whether it's a sedentary lifestyle or the disease itself that contributes to people being overweight. If you are over weight or obese, you are more likely to develop heart disease, stroke, high-blood pressure, diabetes, gallbladder disease and gout.

Motivation that makes healthy sense

Talk to your doctor to determine what is a healthy weight for you and make that your goal. To reach your goal weight safely, consider the following suggestions:

  • Don't try to lose it all at once. Gradual weight loss is typically easier and safer. According to the Dietary Guideline for Americans, one-half to two pounds a week may be a reasonable goal.
  • Revamp your diet. Reduce the amount of calories you consume in one day by approximately 250 to 1000 calories depending on how much you are already eating.
  • Start an exercise program and aim to increase the amount of calories you expend in a day by about 250 to 1000 calories.
  • Try to avoid fad diets. Some may pose a risk to your health and are not recommended for long-term weight loss.
  • Whether you're eating less or exercising more, talk to your doctor to find out what is appropriate for you.
