If you're overweightand most Americans areyour psoriasis may be worse than it would be if you shed the extra pounds. That's the opinion of dermatologist Guy Webster, MD, PhD. Dr. Webster is Vice Chairman for Clinical Affairs at Jefferson Medical College and a Professor in the departments of Dermatology and Internal Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. Below, he offers some insight on whether losing weight can help improve your psoriasis.
Tipping the scales
Can psoriasis cause you to gain weight? No one knows for sure. Some doctors believe that a weight problem could be a symptom of depression. And how you cope with your psoriasis emotionally is essential to successful treatment. So, to help treat the psoriasis, you've also got to get healthy emotionally. Then you can really tackle the weight gain. It has been shown that there may be a relationship between weight loss and your psoriasis. Work with your doctor to achieve total body health and you might see some results that surprise you.
Motivation that makes sense
Losing weight is hard. You've got to change more than your dietyou may have to change your approach to food. It may be worthwhile to enlist the help of a nutritionist or dietitian to get the ball rolling and help you track your progress. Take it one pound at a timeand don't give up on yourselfyou're trying to make a change for the better.
Fad diets are not for you
Quick, no-effort weight loss schemes are really not for anyone, but if you're on helpful medications for your psoriasis, the combination of an extreme diet or weight loss supplements and your medicines may place undue stress on your liver and kidneys. That's even more reason to consult with your doctor about more appropriate weight loss strategies.
Exercise caution
While there may be innumerable benefits to exercise, people with psoriasis should take special care when developing an exercise regimen. Some things to remember:
- Increased blood circulation can cause you to perspire, which can irritate your psoriasis. So guard your skin against chafing by liberally applying a zinc-oxide-based ointment and lots of talcum before working out.
- Always wear clean clothes and pay particular attention to areas of your body where skin rubs against skin.
- As always, it's a good idea to work with your doctor to determine an exercise program that works for you.
Now get out there and get fit. Weight loss is something you can do for yourself. It may improve your skin, and lessen your discomfort. And if you can get back into your favorite jeans, even better!
